The goal of in situ cancer treatment is to avoid a future recurrence of an in situ cancer or an invasive cancer.
- for in situ cancers (measuring less than 30mm) it is recommended to proceed to an in situ cancer treatment followed by breast radiotherapy.
- for large or multifocal cancers it is recommended to proceed to a non-conserving technique (radical surgery or mastectomy). Most often it is possible to have an immediate breast reconstruction as in general there is no need for post-operative radiotherapy. For security reasons, some doctors recommend to perform a sentinel lymph node biopsy during this type of surgical intervention.
