A myomectomy is the surgical removal of one or several uterine myomas(fibroids).
Myomectomies can be performed via:
- endoscopy procedures oftentimes on an outpatient basis,
- other surgical methods.
Recently, non-surgical treatments are developing such as uterine artery embolization and focused ultrasound surgery. These techniques are not technically-speaking myomectomies because the myomas are not physically removed. These newer techniques aim to reduce the size of the myomas and cut off the blood supply to the myomas in order to deprive them of blood flow thereby reducing their volume.
