Laparoscopic hysterectomy

This is the removal of the uterus with the aid of a coelioscope or a laparoscope.

An endoscope camera is inserted near the navel, small cuts are made in the belly above the pubic bone (5 mm to 1 cm in diameter) and trocars are also inserted with operating instruments.

This procedure enables the surgeon to operate on the area similar to a laparotomy without having to open the abdomen. This method (endoscopic) works well when the uterus is not very large without a mass of ligaments (facilitating access).

Recovery rates are faster than those with laparotomy procedures (because the abdomen is not opened). The cervix can remain in place.

This technique can be used for cancer treatment allowing for extension to the uterus support ligaments and pelvic lymph nodes.
